Playing off the name of this gallery space, View from includes photographs Anika Steppe made of three courtyards. Steppe asks what knowledge we acquire about a place if we learn by comparison, relating it to places we have been in the past or to places we have not been before. Rooted in her experiences of anticipating, encountering, and mapping a place, Steppe created an illustrated story of a Google Street View photographer documenting the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center building and turned the Courtyard Gallery into her studio with a series of Leica “instant” exposures, a bank of small plastic viewers, and carpet-patterned wallpaper. In effect, Steppe’s photographs (and her photographs of photographs) create fantasies of places somewhere out there, in here.
